Monticello, NY - There will be a Special Meeting of the Legislature for Thursday, June 15, 2017 at 10:45AM in the Legislative Chambers, 100 North Street, Monticello, New York. The purpose of the meeting is to discuss the letter “d” proposed, pending or current litigation. Please be advised that the Legislature will immediately go into Executive Session and will not conduct any business when Executive Session is concluded.

County Warns of Heat Exhaustion

Liberty - Sullivan County Public Health Services reminds Sullivan County residents to know the signs of heat-related illness and to protect themselves during this heat wave that is expected to continue through mid-week. Summertime heat can be dangerous. Some people can be at risk of serious health effects from heat exhaustion or heat stroke.

Press Advisory: Sullivan County Charter Revision Commission to issue Final Report

On Thursday June 15, the Sullivan County Charter Revision Commission, which has been meeting since February 2015, will deliver its Final Report to the County Legislature at the 11:30 AM meeting of the Executive Committee.

The report will propose that Sullivan fundamentally alter its form of government, a change that would have to be approved by popular referendum.

The Commission will also reiterate its recommendation that the terms of the nine-member county legislature be staggered, with a maximum of five legislators on the ballot in any year.

Sullivan County Treasurer Nancy Buck announces that the 2017 Sullivan County Tax Foreclosure Real Estate Auction conducted Wednesday, June 14 and Thursday, June 15 by NYSAuctions.com resulted in 260 of 303 parcels tentatively sold, pending necessary legislative approvals and closings. “We had crowds on both days, with a lot of interest,” she states. “And the bids exceeded the outstanding taxes.” The delinquencies on those 260 properties totals $1,540,566.74. The Sullivan County Legislature will briefly meet Tuesday, June 20 at 10 a.m. to approve/reject the purchases.

County Confirms First Travel-Related Zika Virus Case, But No Local Transmission Present

Liberty, NY - Sullivan County Public Health Services has received confirmation that an individual from Sullivan County has a case of travel-related Zika virus. The individual recently traveled to South America where Zika virus is common.

Nancy McGraw, Sullivan County Public Health Director, noted, “There is currently NO local transmission of Zika virus from mosquitoes in Sullivan County, and there are no mosquitoes of the species type that can transmit the Zika virus in Sullivan County identified by surveillance performed by the NYS Department of Health.

Sullivan County Hiring Additional Sheriff’s Deputies

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Sheriff Michael Schiff, Sullivan County Manager Josh Potosek, Sullivan County Legislature Chairman Luis Alvarez and District 5 Legislator Terri Ward are pleased to announce the coming addition of five new deputies to the Sheriff’s Office’s Road Patrol Division.

Unanimously approved by the Legislature on Thursday, June 15, the positions will augment the existing 35-man force now patrolling Sullivan County’s 1,000 square miles.

Grey Fox Tests Positive for Rabies

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Public Health Services is advising the public to stay away from wild animals and be vigilant of your surroundings while camping, hiking or playing in area parks near wooded areas. A grey fox that bit two people in the Town of Thompson has tested positive for rabies, and the individuals are being treated.
