Legislature Recognizes Soap Box Derby World Champion and Car's Creator

Monticello, NY – Fifteen-year-old Brianna Roth might not be as big a fan of soap box derby racing as 17-year-old family friend Morgan Van Keuren, but his passion for the sport and her drive to win landed Brianna in the top spot at the All-American Soap Box Derby World Championships last month.

And the car in which she sped through the rain for 986 feet in 29 seconds – the one Morgan built with best friend Cascio Fonseca in the Liberty school bus garage – now sits in the Soap Box Derby Hall of Fame Museum in Akron, Ohio, where Brianna became the World Champion on July 22.

Lake Superior Beach Hours Changing

Bethel, NY – Due to a regional lifeguard shortage, Lake Superior State Park’s beach in Bethel will see its operational hours altered as the season comes to an end.

The beach will not be open on August 27, 28, 29 and 31. This includes swimming and rentals of rowboats and paddleboats. However, the beach, swimming, rowboating and paddleboating will be open and available on August 22-26, 30 and September 1-3.

County Has Immediate Need for Drivers of the Elderly

Monticello, NY – With more requests than the current crop of volunteers can fulfill, the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) urgently seeks additional drivers to take local senior citizens to crucial medical appointments.

“This is an invaluable service to our community but one in which we constantly struggle to maintain a level of volunteer drivers adequate to meet the demand,” RSVP Project Director Caryn Mathews stated. “Currently, we average 100+ requests a month yet can only provide drivers for about half of that.”
