Hurleyville, NY – When Mickey Barnett (a longtime Catskills resort performer and Rock-a Billy Hall of Fame member) suggested Sullivan County bring a doo-wop band to the Museum’s First Sunday Music and History program, organizers wondered, “What does doo-wop have to do with Sullivan County history?”

Well, according to Barnett, there were doo-wop bands playing all over the County back in the resort heydays. Who knew!

Swan Lake, NY – The National Weather Service will hold a SKYWARN Basic course in Sullivan County on November 12 at 6:30 p.m. at the Emergency Services Training Center in Swan Lake. There is no cost to attend, and the public – particularly first-responders – is welcome.

Monticello, NY – A majority of Sullivan County legislators this week agreed to acquire 21 acres for a new visitors center, to be located in Rock Hill and built without using local taxpayer dollars.

Hurleyville, NY – Dr. Frederick Cook, the world-renowned Arctic explorer, was born in 1865 into a small family in Hortonville, right here in Sullivan County. His fame came from his discovery of the North Pole, but he was also a physician, an entrepreneur, an ethnographer and an author. One of Dr. Cook’s books in particular, “Return from the Pole,” remains a powerful and beautifully written work that affirms the highest values of the human spirit.

And yet his life was defined by controversy.

Monticello, NY – Legislators in the County’s Management & Budget Committee today tentatively authorized a wireless broadband pilot project that, if successful, could ultimately bring high-speed Internet access to most of the unserved/underserved portions of Sullivan County.

Swan Lake, NY – The Sullivan County Office for the Aging has scheduled a Public Hearing on Wednesday, October 16 at the Sullivan County Airport Terminal Lobby, 75 Co. Rd. 183A (Airport Road) in Swan Lake, to gain input from older residents, baby boomers, and other interested parties on programs and services provided by the agency. The Public Hearing begins at 8:30 a.m. with registration and a free light breakfast, followed by a health fair.
