Liberty, NY – Sullivan County residents can now attend the New York State Office for People With Developmental Disabilities’ (OPWDD’s) Front Door Orientation session without having to travel to Orange County.

The Front Door process guides you through the steps involved in finding out if you or a loved one are eligible for services offered by OPWDD, helps to identify specific needs and helps you work on a plan for getting services.

Kitten Tests Positive for Rabies in Fallsburg

Fallsburg, NY – Sullivan County Public Health Services is advising the public to stay away from stray cats as well as wild animals and to be vigilant of your surroundings, especially if you live or work near a wooded area or neighborhood with feral cats.

A feral kitten recently bit a person in the Town of Fallsburg, and they are now being treated for rabies exposure. Public Health Services is conducting an investigation with animal control to determine if more individuals have been exposed.

Home Energy Assistance Program (HEAP) Starts Soon

Liberty, NY – With colder days not that far off, Sullivan County’s Division of Health & Family Services wants residents to understand what is being offered and what is being required through this year’s HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program).

“HEAP season begins November 12, but folks need to get ready before then, to ensure they’re eligible and in the program,” explained Health & Family Services Commissioner Joe Todora. “The earlier we know their needs, the more certain residents can be of receiving HEAP benefits at the time they need them.”

Legislator Samuelson Becomes President of Statewide Association

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County proudly announces that District 1 Legislator Scott Samuelson has been elected the Board President for the NYS Association of Counties (NYSAC), the influential advocacy and support organization for New York State’s 62 counties.

The appointment was made official yesterday in front of more than 600 attendees of NYSAC’s annual Fall Seminar, held for the first time at Resorts World Catskills in Monticello.

REMINDER: Sullivan County Not Collecting School Taxes

Monticello, NY – Taxpayers should be aware that the Sullivan County Treasurer’s Office will not be collecting school taxes this November. The Sullivan County Legislature approved the change earlier this year.

“Each school district in Sullivan County has determined to end their tax collection on different dates,” explained Treasurer Nancy Buck. “I strongly urge taxpayers to review their school tax bills carefully to ensure they are aware of the last day to pay their school taxes.” 

Public Health Shares State's Vaping Advisory

Liberty, NY – The New York State Department of Health has issued a health advisory to inform the public of an emerging health threat related to the use of vape products.

Several cases of severe pulmonary (lung) disease have been reported in NYS among patients who reported recent use of vape products. While detailed information on the reported products used, the name and type of products used, as well as the delivery method are still being investigated, many cases reported the use of tetranydrocannabinol (THC)-containing products, as well as other products.
