Sullivan County Scores Well Again in NYS Comptroller's Fiscal Stress List

Monticello, NY – For the fourth year in a row, the NYS Comptroller’s Office has designated Sullivan County free of fiscal stress.

The Office recently released its 2018 Fiscal Stress rankings for municipalities and school districts statewide, based on the annual financial reports submitted to the Office. Sullivan County again scored well, earning the best rank of “No Designation” (meaning there are no indications of the County being susceptible to fiscal stress at this time).

County Issues Pertussis Health Advisory

Liberty, NY – Sullivan County Public Health Services would like to notify the public that three confirmed cases of pertussis (whooping cough) have been identified in children of varying ages in Sullivan County this week.

“This is an important advisory,” Public Health Director Nancy McGraw stated. “As recently as 2016, Sullivan County had a pertussis outbreak of nearly 30 cases, and dozens of additional probable cases were investigated, interviewed and individuals treated.”

County Coroner Elected to Statewide Board

Monticello, NY – Longtime Sullivan County Coroner Michael Speer returned to the board of the NYS Association of County Coroners and Medical Examiners (NYSACCME) on September 21, when members unanimously elected him to a four-year at-large position, representing the entire State.

A 20-year member of NYSACCME, Speer previously served as treasurer of the board. He and fellow Sullivan County coroners Alan Kesten, Albee Bockman and B. Elton Harris were instrumental in bringing NYSACCME’s annual conference to Sullivan County last year.

Sullivan County Earns SolSmart 'Silver' Award for Advancing Solar Energy Growth

Hurleyville, NY – When Mickey Barnett (a longtime Catskills resort performer and Rock-a Billy Hall of Fame member) suggested Sullivan County bring a doo-wop band to the Museum’s First Sunday Music and History program, organizers wondered, “What does doo-wop have to do with Sullivan County history?”

Well, according to Barnett, there were doo-wop bands playing all over the County back in the resort heydays. Who knew!

Hurleyville, NY – Dr. Frederick Cook, the world-renowned Arctic explorer, was born in 1865 into a small family in Hortonville, right here in Sullivan County. His fame came from his discovery of the North Pole, but he was also a physician, an entrepreneur, an ethnographer and an author. One of Dr. Cook’s books in particular, “Return from the Pole,” remains a powerful and beautifully written work that affirms the highest values of the human spirit.

And yet his life was defined by controversy.
