Loch Sheldrake, NY – Up to $20 million may be bonded to make SUNY Sullivan’s indoor pool and sports arena a reality, thanks to the Sullivan County Legislature.

Monticello, NY – Two more Saturdays of En Plein Air Poetry and Art Workshops are coming to Sullivan County’s parks before the season ends.

Sullivan County’s new Poet Laureate Sharon Kennedy-Nolle and former Poet Laureate Eric Baylin will host these free workshops, held in cooperation with Sullivan County’s Office of Parks, Recreation and Beautification and the Sullivan Public Library Alliance.

Using nature as inspiration for painting, drawing, and verse-making, the workshops bring art and poetry into creative conversation. Each two-hour outing begins at 11 a.m.:

Monticello, NY – A majority of legislators today picked a map – called “Option 3” – as their preferred district layout for the next decade.

Legislators Robert A. Doherty, Michael Brooks, Nicholas Salomone, George Conklin and Alan Sorensen voted in favor, after deciding against options 1 and 2. Legislators Nadia Rajsz, Luis Alvarez, Joseph Perrello and Ira Steingart voted not to accept any of the options, expressing a desire to extend the period of review.

Liberty, NY – Sullivan County’s Department of Public Health is working closely with the NYS Department of Health to secure additional polio vaccine for area healthcare providers and the County health department even before the possibility that the poliovirus is detected in Sullivan County. 

Bethel, NY – A potentially harmful algae bloom at Lake Superior State Park in Bethel has cleared out, and test results from the NYS Department of Health indicate no presence in the swim area. As such, Lake Superior’s swimming and boat rentals features will once again be available on Saturday, August 13 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Hurleyville, NY – On Thursday, August 18, at 6 p.m., author Darrell Hartman will talk about his forthcoming book, “Battle of Ink and Ice,” which tells the story of the 1909 North Pole Controversy, with a focus on the New York City newspapers that turned the polar dispute between Sullivan County native Frederick Cook and Robert Peary into one of the century's greatest news stories.

The talk will take place at the Sullivan County Museum in Hurleyville and is being sponsored by the Frederick Cook Society.

Bethel, NY – Due to an unhealthy algae bloom, Sullivan County has temporarily suspended swimming and paddleboat rentals at Lake Superior State Park in Bethel.

Come out and celebrate the dog days of summer at the 1st annual Bow WO&W Dog Walk on Thursday, August 11th at 6PM in Mountaindale. Bring your leashed dog and the whole family for a walk on the Mountaindale section of the Sullivan O&W Rail Trail. The Bow WO&W is presented by the Sullivan O&W Rail Trail Alliance.

Rock Hill, NY – A County-erected tower atop a Rock Hill peak is now in operation, with a public cell signal available to areas long unserved or underserved.

Hurleyville, NY – On any given summer day, you can usually find somebody somewhere playing live music in the Sullivan County Catskills. The area is chock full of music lovers, musicians, and the business owners who support them. And though the pandemic took a toll on the industry, many of the local businesses rallied around the music and ramped up their outdoor spaces.
