Recycling Has a New Face in Sullivan County

Monticello, NY – Monticello resident Kassie Thelman is thrilled to be back working in her home County.

“It felt right,” says Thelman, who left a nearly seven-year inspection and operations job with a prestigious Orange County materials testing firm to become Sullivan County’s Recycling Coordinator. “I am excited to share the latest information about solid waste and recycling with our community. I feel like I can really make a difference here.”

Public Welcome to Weigh in on Tentative County Budget

Monticello, NY – Formal public hearings about the proposed 2023 Sullivan County Budget have been set for December 6 at 5 p.m. and December 8 at 11 a.m. in the Hearing Room of the Government Center, 100 North Street, Monticello. Music, Lunch and History at the County Museum

Hurleyville, NY – The Sullivan County Museum in Hurleyville is also home to the Frederick Cook Society, a non-profit organization that dates back to 1940. The Society's mission is to defend Hortonville native Dr. Cook's claim to the discovery of the North Pole.

On Friday afternoon, December 9, the Cook Society will present a talk about Dr. Cook's famous Belgica Expedition, along with a musical performance by Little Sparrow and special guest Van Manakas. Van is a world-class guitarist who has performed on 5 continents and in all 50 states.

Neversink Fox Tests Positive for Rabies

Grahamsville, NY – Sullivan County Public Health is advising the public to stay away from wild animals and be vigilant of your surroundings while camping, hiking or playing in area parks near wooded areas.

“A grey fox that was acting aggressively in the Town of Neversink was captured by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation, sent to the NYS Department of Health laboratory, and tested positive for rabies,” said Public Health Director Nancy McGraw. “There were no known exposures to humans or domestic animals, although it was found wandering near a residential home.”

Health Advisory: Avian Flu Detected Locally

Liberty, NY – The Sullivan County Department of Public Health has been notified of an outbreak of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza (HPAI) within a multi-species flock in Sullivan County. This was laboratory-confirmed to be of the H5N1 influenza strain.

The flock includes chickens, ducks, geese and guinea fowl, who possibly were exposed via contact with wild waterfowl. As of this notification, more than 100 birds have succumbed to the infection, with the remainder of the 116-bird flock being euthanized this past weekend.
