Today’s accident between two school vehicles left us shocked and saddened, and Sullivan County extends deep condolences to the family of the driver who died from the crash. Our hearts also reach out to the young children and their families, who are enduring the trauma of surviving a serious accident and the many associated injuries, both physical and emotional.

Liberty, NY – According to the NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, New York’s Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system will be unavailable on Sunday, May 19, 2024, between midnight and 11 a.m. to accommodate a change in the system’s vendor.

“The actual outage may be shorter or longer, and we want our EBT card users to be aware,” says Giselle Steketee, Sullivan County’s deputy social services commissioner. “Check www.otda.ny.gov on May 19 to find out when the EBT system is back up and running.”

Bethel, NY – Lake Superior State Park in Bethel will open to the public for picnicking, boat rentals (kayaks, pedal boats, and row boats), and swimming starting Memorial Day Weekend and continue to operate every weekend through the end of June from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Daily operation commences at the end of June through Labor Day, from 9 a.m.-7 p.m. Friday-Sunday and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday-Thursday, subject to weather conditions.

Liberty, NY – In conjunction with the New York State Department of Health, the Sullivan County Department of Public Health is now accepting applications for the prestigious New York State Public Health Corps (NYSPHC) Fellowship Program, a first-in-the-nation initiative to strengthen local and Statewide workforce capacities to better respond to future public health emergencies.

Fremont Center, NY – The Sullivan County Department of Public Health has confirmed that a deceased baby fox (kit) in the Town of Fremont tested positive for the rabies virus. Exposed persons are currently receiving appropriate treatment.

Monticello, NY - Brian P. Conaty, District Attorney of Sullivan County, announced that on May 2, 2024, Brandon Quick, 27, of Livingston Manor, was sentenced to 20 years’ incarceration in state prison following his conviction, by plea of guilty, to Course of Sexual Conduct Against a Child, a Class B Violent Felony, before Sullivan County Court Judge James R. Farrell. Quick entered this his plea of guilty on March 8, 2024.

Verona, NY – As part of its annual County Finance School session this month, the NYS County Treasurers and Finance Officers Association recognized Sullivan County Treasurer Nancy Buck with the prestigious Finance Officer of the Year Award.

“I was so honored when they announced I was the only one for whom they voted,” said Buck, a 20-year member of the Association. “The ballot goes out to all the members, but this isn’t a list where you simply check off your choice.”
