Raccoon Killed in Fremont Tests Positive for Rabies

Fremont Center, NY – Sullivan County Public Health has confirmed that a raccoon in the Fremont Center area tested positive for the rabies virus.

“The raccoon was killed, and the property owners called Public Health, just as they should,” said Acting Public Health Director Karen Holden. “The head of the raccoon was sent to Albany today, and it came back positive for rabies.”

Apply Starting May 1 for HEAP Cooling

Liberty, NY – Worried about suffering in the heat this summer? Sullivan County’s HEAP (Home Energy Assistance Program) Office will begin accepting Cooling Benefit applications on Monday, May 1, continuing until funds run out.

The Cooling Benefit can provide eligible applicants with an air conditioner in a room in their home if they suffer from a medical condition that is made worse by extreme heat.

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Youth Bureau is now accepting grant applications from organizations which serve children and youth within Sullivan County.

The Youth Bureau receives monies annually from the County and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services to fund youth development programs within Sullivan County. Eligible applicants include private nonprofit organizations, schools and municipalities.

Portion of Road Near Liberty Close for Six Months

Ferndale, NY – The Sullivan County Division of Public Works is closing a portion of Denman Road in the Town of Liberty to replace County Bridge 272, which is located approximately 1 mile south of Denman’s intersection with State Route 52. This section of road is scheduled to be closed to all traffic starting 8 a.m. May 8, 2023, and will remain closed for approximately 6 months.

Swan Lake, NY – The Sullivan County Emergency Services Training Center on April 22 hosted the Association of Fire Districts of the State of New York (AFDSNY) Commissioner’s Training Class for 28 Sullivan County fire commissioners and six out-of-County commissioners.

Road Near Parksville to Close for One Day

Parksville, NY – The Sullivan County Division of Public Works is closing a portion of Lily Pond Road in the Town of Liberty to replace County Bridge 228, located approximately 500 feet north of the intersection of Cooley Road (County Road 85) and Town Highway 47 (Lily Pond Rd.). The road will be closed to all traffic starting at 7 a.m. this Thursday, April 20, 2023 and will remain closed for one day.

Conference Draws Fire Service Leaders

During the April 15 Fire Chiefs’ Conference in Ferndale, Sullivan County Health & Human Services Commissioner John Liddle shared insights from being both a U.S. Navy officer (now retired) and a firefighter in his hometown of Liberty.

Ferndale, NY – The Sullivan County Bureau of Fire on Saturday held its Fire Chiefs’ Conference at the CVI Building in Ferndale. Forty officers from 11 departments attended – and there would have been more. Unfortunately, several officers were needed to take care of a large wildland fire near Roscoe and could not attend.
