Office for the Aging to Have Limited Service on September 24

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County’s Office for the Aging will provide limited service on Tuesday, September 24 while staff prepare for and attend the Annual Luncheon of the Office’s Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP).

“In order to give our RSVP volunteers the kind of appreciation they deserve, we’ll need most of our staff engaged in the celebration,” explained Office for the Aging Director Lise-Anne Deoul. “Thus, with only a small crew in our Monticello office, the public should anticipate a potentially longer wait time and a temporary lack of full capability.”

Stanton Corners Road to Close for Three Weeks

Swan Lake, NY – The Sullivan County Division of Public Works is closing a portion of Stanton Corners Rd. (County Road 74) in the Town of Liberty to replace County Bridge 473.

County Bridge 473 is located approximately 0.7 miles east of the intersection of State Route 55 and Stanton Corners Road near Swan Lake.

This section of road is scheduled to be closed to all traffic starting 8 a.m. September 23, 2024, and will remain closed for approximately three (3) weeks, weather-dependent.

POW/MIA Day to Be Observed in Monticello

The Fallen Comrade Table, present at every Sullivan County POW/MIA Recognition Day, features a specific set of items designed to remember American servicepeople who were/are Prisoners of War or Missing in Action.

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Veterans Service Agency will host a special ceremony in honor of POW/MIA Recognition Day at 1 p.m. on Friday, September 20 inside the lobby of the Sullivan County Government Center, 100 North Street, Monticello. The public is cordially invited to attend.

Lake Superior Swimming and Boat Rentals Continue in September

Bethel, NY – Lake Superior State Park will remain open to the public for picnicking, boat rentals, and swimming on Saturdays during September. Hours will be from 10 a.m.-6 p.m.

Daily admission to enter the park is $5 per person. Season Pass holders, children under 3 years old and veterans who present a valid ID issued through the Sullivan County Return the F.A.V.O.R. program can enter for free. Boat rental fee is $8 per hour – choose from kayaks (1- or 2-person), pedalboats or rowboats.

Get Rid of Hazardous Household Waste on October 20

Monticello, NY – Plenty of household materials can be dangerous to people and the environment if thrown away improperly, notes Sullivan County Recycling Coordinator Kassie Thelman.

“This includes everyday pesticides, mercury-containing items, cleaning products, pool chemicals, fluorescent bulbs, fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, lead-based/oil-based paints, solvents, acids, bases, herbicides, old fuels (stale gasoline/2-cycle fuel mix), consumer & automotive batteries, antifreeze and preservatives, just to name a few,” she says.

Tax Foreclosure Auction Set for September 9-11

Monticello, NY – The 2024 Sullivan County Real Estate Tax Foreclosure Auction will be held online only from Monday, September 9 through Wednesday, September 11.

Sullivan County Treasurer Nancy Buck urges potential bidders to register now at https://aarauctions.com/servlet/Search.do?auctionId=6787 to receive a packet via email explaining the terms and conditions of the auction, along with the foreclosure process and associated liens. A bidders’ seminar is available to watch online, as well.

Delinquent Property Taxes Can Be Paid in Installments

Monticello, NY – Due to new State regulations, Sullivan County’s Installment Agreement Program for the payment of delinquent taxes has been modified.

“The most important change is that these agreements can only be made with residential properties. Commercial properties are no longer eligible,” County Treasurer Nancy Buck explains. “My office will use the Class Code assigned by town assessors to determine whether a parcel is residential.”
