Lake Superior Beach Reopens Tomorrow

Bethel, NY – Sullivan County will be reopening the beach and resuming boat rentals tomorrow, Saturday, August 10, at Lake Superior State Park in Bethel, starting at 9 a.m.

Due to an unhealthy algae bloom, the County had temporarily suspended swimming and boat rentals earlier this week. The algae has dissipated.

The park continues to be open for picnicking, hiking and land-based recreation. There is also a public boat launch available.

Portion of County Route 115 to Close for Three Weeks

Lake Huntington, NY - The Sullivan County Division of Public Works is closing a portion of County Road 115 (Odell Road) in the Town of Cochecton to replace County Bridge 472, located immediately west of the intersection of Fred White Rd. with CR 115.

This section of County Road 115 is scheduled to be closed to all traffic starting 8 a.m. August 14, 2024, and will remain closed for approximately three (3) weeks.  Travelers will be directed on a detour route using Fred White Rd. and Tyler Rd.

Welsh Road Near Kenoza Lake to Close for Five Weeks

Kenoza Lake, NY - The Sullivan County Division of Public Works will close a portion of Welsh Road in the Town of Delaware to repair County-maintained Bridge 225. The section of road will be closed to traffic starting 7 a.m. on Wednesday, August 14 and will remain closed for approximately five (5) weeks.

The Sullivan County Division of Public Works will post signage for a detour using State Route 52A and State Route 52.

Sullivan County Buildings Closed After Emailed Threat

Monticello, NY – Due to a non-specific threat emailed to Sullivan County government’s main address, Acting Sullivan County Deputy Manager Michelle Huck authorized the closure of several public buildings throughout the County today.

“Out of an abundance of caution, we decided to close the Government Center, the Center for Workforce Development (both in Monticello) and our Social Services campus in Liberty today,” explained Huck. “While we do not believe the threat was genuine, we asked law enforcement to sweep our buildings for any security concerns, of which they found none.”

Legislator Appointed to National Committee

Liberty, NY – Sullivan County District 6 Legislator Luis Alvarez has been appointed to the influential Health Steering Committee of the National Association of Counties (NACo).

NACo President James Gore this month notified Alvarez of his appointment, following prior service on the national advocacy organization’s Immigration Reform Task Force, Programs and Services Standing Committee, Rural Action Caucus, and Veterans and Military Services Committee.

DA Conaty Announces Arrest for Death of Child Left in Car

Monticello, NY - On August 1, 2024, Sullivan County District Attorney Brian P. Conaty announced the arrest of Sarah Carter, 33, of Monticello, for Criminally Negligent Homicide, a Class E felony, for causing the death of Antonio Suarez-Ware, 2 years old, by leaving him unattended and alone in her 2012 Ford Explorer for several hours with the vehicle turned off and the windows rolled up on July 16, 2024. Recent reports indicate that the temperature exceeded 90 degrees Fahrenheit that day.
