Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Public Health has confirmed that a skunk in the Monticello area tested positive for the rabies virus.

“The skunk was killed, and the property owners called Public Health, just as they should,” said Acting Public Health Director Jill Hubert-Simon. “The head of the skunk was sent to Albany, and it came back positive for rabies.”

Liberty, NY – Legislators listened to an extensive review of Sullivan County’s child welfare policies and procedures today in the Health and Human Services Committee of the Legislature.

Undertaken by the Bonadio Group, the review was ordered by the Legislature, at the request of County Manager Joshua Potosek, at the beginning of this year as a follow-up to investigations conducted by the New York State Office of Children and Family Services (OCFS) and a Sullivan County Grand Jury into the death of a toddler at a local hotel last year.

Swan Lake, NY – Over 50 Sullivan County firefighters and around the same amount of Public Works employees traveled to the Sullivan County Emergency Services Training Center to see a “Live Wire” demonstration by NYSEG last week. In the wake of a near-fatal electrocution in Sullivan County last year, the emphasis was on safety for the NYSEG linemen, firefighters, highway workers and the general public.

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Legislature is looking for community members to serve on the board of the Sullivan County Human Rights Commission, starting in 2025.

“The Commission needs a full-time executive director and a reconstituted board,” explained Legislature Chair Nadia Rajsz. “All nine legislators have an opportunity to nominate someone to the board, but we need volunteers to step forward and let us know they’re interested.”

Monticello, NY - On September 25, 2024, Sullivan County District Attorney Brian P. Conaty announced that Jacob McCoy, 50, of Monticello, was sentenced to the maximum of nine years’ incarceration in State prison to be followed by two-years of post-release supervision by Sullivan County Court Judge James R. Farrell upon McCoy’s convictions of two counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the Third Degree, Class B felonies.
