Sullivan County Celebrates America Recycles Day

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Department of Solid Waste and Recycling is pleased to announce that Wednesday, November 15 is America Recycles Day. 

America Recycles Day, a Keep America Beautiful national initiative, is the only nationally-recognized day dedicated to promoting and celebrating recycling in the United States.  Each year, people across the country participate by promoting environmental citizenship and taking action to increase and improve recycling in America. 

Sullivan County Ups the Fight Against Fraud

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Welfare Fraud Task Force today announced multiple new arrests in an ongoing effort to root out waste and abuse of the County’s Social Services system.

The Task Force incorporates resources from the District Attorney’s Office, the Sheriff’s Office and the Special Investigations Unit at Family Services. The primary goals are to obtain restitution and deter future instances of fraud.

Own a Pistol or Revolver? Don't Forget to Recertify

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Clerk Daniel Briggs reminds all pistol/revolver license-holders that the New York State SAFE Act requires them to recertify every five years in order to keep their license.

For some, that means an important deadline is looming.

“If your license was issued before January 15, 2013, you must submit your recertification by January 31, 2018 – which is just two months away,” Briggs noted. “If your license was issued on or after January 15, 2013, you will need to submit your recertification five years after the date of issue.”

Health Advisory Issued About Whooping Cough Case

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Public Health Services would like to notify the public that a probable
case of pertussis (also known as whooping cough) has been identified this week in the Monticello School District.

Public Health staff has been working closely with the district and healthcare providers in the County to notify parents and to monitor and identify any additional suspected cases to ensure timely treatment and to prevent or control additional cases quickly. 

What Is Sexual Harassment? And What Can You Do About It?

Monticello, NY – As the Sullivan County Human Rights Commission pursues its mission of making the County “the best possible place to live,” they stand firm in the commitment to protect the rights of local citizens against all forms of discrimination.

Just like harassment against people because of race, color, religion, national origin, gender, age, disability, sexual orientation/preference, marital status, or criminal conviction, sexual harassment is equally WRONG and should not be tolerated.

Sullivan County Issues Important Reminder About Safe SHARPS Disposal

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Department of Solid Waste and Recycling reminds residents that injection needles, lancets and syringes (SHARPS) MUST be disposed of properly in order to protect people from unintentional needle sticks. 

Used sharps may hold residual blood infected by HIV (the virus that causes AIDS) or Hepatitis B & C. Someone who accidentally gets cut or stuck by a used sharp could get infected from the blood.
