When This 'Posse' Is Called Out, Good Things Happen

Monticello, NY – Mention “The Posse” in most places, and you’d be met with confusion, skepticism or suspicion. But drop that same phrase in the Town of Bethel, and you’re likely to receive a smile in return.

“This Posse is built around Bethel,” affirms Allan Abramson, the group’s founder and thus its “Sheriff.”

“But we’re not a militia!” adds “Deputy” Dan Silna, to chuckles from his fellow deputies.

Human Rights Commission and Legislature Honor Hispanic-Americans for Outstanding Service

Monticello, NY – The United States celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15. Approved by President Lyndon Johnson, and later expanded by President Ronald Reagan to a full month, the month is set aside to celebrate the customs, traditions, and successes of United States citizens with Hispanic ethnicities. Hispanic-Americans such as writer Julia Alvarez, actor Edward James Olmos, musician Gloria Estefan, activist Cesar Chavez, and many more have used their success to serve as positive role models.

County Building Named After Leading Nurse

Liberty, NY – Sullivan County officials joined the staff of Public Health Services today to officially dedicate the Gladys Olmsted Sullivan County Public Health Services Building.

The recognition comes after the County Legislature passed a resolution honoring Olmsted, a pioneering nurse and former Public Health Services director who passed away in 1997. The efforts of the Sullivan County Historical Society were instrumental in that effort.

In Wake of Flood, County Extends Rockland Transfer Station Hours

Livingston Manor, NY – In order to accommodate the significant cleanup efforts ongoing in and around Livingston Manor, Sullivan County’s Rockland Transfer Station will extend its hours of operation from the usual 2:45 p.m. to 5 p.m. this Thursday, November 2.

Flooding in the early hours of October 30 damaged homes and businesses in the downtown area, ruining furniture, carpeting, fixtures and electronics.

Senior Safety Day Hosts Over 100

Monticello, NY - Sullivan County Office for the Aging (OFA)’s annual public hearing followed by the 7th annual Senior Safety Day was held Wednesday, October 18, 2017 in the Ted Stroebele Recreation Center.  The hearing, led by OFA Director Deborah Allen, reviewed current services provided by the Office for the Aging, introducing other OFA staff, with an opportunity for public comment. Bonnie Lewis, RN of Cornell Cooperative Extension Sullivan County (CCESC)’s Caregiver Resource Center (CRC) coordinated the Senior Safety Day event with OFA which hosted over 100 guests!
