Police Conduct Active-Shooter Training Inside Former Elementary School

White Lake, NY – Close to 30 police officers from Sullivan County and surrounding areas participated in active-shooter training this week through a coordinated effort between the County’s Office of Emergency Management and the Sheriff’s Office.

Utilizing the former Duggan Elementary School in White Lake (now a community center, but still owned by the Monticello Central School District), the officers honed their skills in tactical entry into and clearance of a building, teamwork and communications, and the treatment of wounds both serious and minor.

County Purchases Broadway Office Building

Monticello, NY – The former home of Middletown Medical and other doctors’ offices is now owned by the County of Sullivan and will be transformed into the Board of Elections’ new quarters.

Located at 518 Broadway in the heart of downtown Monticello, the 6,800-square-foot, single-story office complex has long served as a medical arts building, but its open floorplan makes it suitable for housing both the relocated Board of Elections and the County’s electronic voting machines.

Newly Discovered History to be Revealed in One-Room Schoolhouse Presentation

Hurleyville, NY – Gordon McAdam will talk about the “One-Room Schoolhouses in the Town of Thompson” on Thursday, August 9, 2018 at 6 p.m. at the Sullivan County Historical Society and Museum, 265 Main Street, Hurleyville. 

Of special interest will be the recently discovered information about the lease agreement for the Columbia Hill one-room schoolhouse.

“I still answer daytime fire calls,” the 79-year-old affirms, the deep sense of pride and obligation so very evident in his eyes. “I have a desire to try to always keep going in the right direction.”

Drug Take Back Day Is This Saturday

Liberty, NY – The Prescription Drug Abuse Prevention Task Force, a subcommittee of the Rural Health Network led by Sullivan County Public Health Services, is again partnering with local law enforcement agencies and Catholic Charities of Orange/Sullivan on another Drug Take Back Day to be held Saturday, July 21 at area police departments and also at two additional locations: Jeff Pharmacy in Jeffersonville and Bethel Senior Center in Kauneonga Lake.

Sullivan County to Share IT Services with Liberty

Liberty, NY – In the latest example of cost-effectively sharing resources with towns and villages, Sullivan County and the Town of Liberty this week inked an agreement that will provide County IT (Information Technology) services to the Town.

“I’m pleased the County can provide real savings for Town taxpayers, and I thank Town Supervisor Brian Rourke and the Liberty Town Board for their initiative and collaboration,” remarked County Manager Josh Potosek.

"Monster Run Classic" to Benefit Veterans on August 5

Monticello, NY - The Monticello Rotary Club 39th Annual Monster Run Classic will be held on Sunday, August 5, 2018. The proceeds from the 2018 Monster Classic race will benefit the Sullivan County Veterans Coalition and is an event run by Monticello Rotary as part of Sullivan County Patriots Day.

Each year this community event draws hundreds of walkers, runners and spectators from all over New York State. This race is expected to draw another very large turnout for this year’s event.

Government Center Parking Lot to Temporarily Close

Monticello, NY - Users of the Sullivan County Government Center in Monticello should be aware that the facility's largest parking lot will be closed for repaving this Thursday, July 19 through Sunday, July 22, and possibly longer.

The above map shows alternate parking options, including handicapped spaces.

Since the Government Center's main North Street entrance is currently closed for sidewalk replacement, various entranceways into the Government Center will also be open and are reflected on the map.
