Executive Director of Human Rights Commission Taking New Job

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Human Rights Commission Executive Director Ari Mir-Pontier has resigned to assume a new role as NYS Senator Jen Metzger’s Constituent Services Manager.

“We so much appreciate all that Ari has accomplished in her 16 months with us, and we warmly wish her nothing but success, knowing she will still be fighting for the rights of everyone,” noted Commission Chair Judy Balaban.

Hurleyville, NY – When Jay Ganz’s mom and grandparents moved to Hurleyville in 1945, they likely could not have imagined that Jay would one day be performing a concert on the stage of the old Hurleyville School, now the Sullivan County Museum.

Jay’s grandfather ran Lester’s Market on Main Street in Hurleyville. The building is gone now but can be seen in many old pictures. Jay’s maternal grandparents bought a farm in Divine Corners in 1921.

Local Artists Invited to Submit Work for Display at the Government Center

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Government Center’s hallways are awash in colorful figures – beyond the workers, visitors and taxpayers walking through!

The Sullivan County Homegrown Artists Exhibition Program has mounted more than two dozen pieces of art in those hallways, from paintings and photographs to collages and sculptures. But with only two of the eight main hallways decorated thus far, the independent committee overseeing the program is seeking more artwork by Sullivan County artists to display in the Government Center.

Chairman Issues Statement on Governor's Announcement

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County Legislature Chairman Luis Alvarez responded today to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s announcement that he will include the long-stalled Child Victims Act in his Executive Budget Proposal for 2019-2020:

“Justice is long overdue for the many adults who suffered at the hands of abusers years ago, and it is time our court system caught up with those crimes. Having witnessed as a former police officer the lifelong impacts of sexual abuse, I applaud Governor Cuomo and the State Legislature for moving forward on the Child Victims Act.”

WIC Moves to Electronic Benefit Cards

Liberty, NY – Sullivan County is now part of the New York State Department of Health’s rollout of eWIC, an electronic benefits transfer card which eliminates paper checks and provides a more convenient way for families in the Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program to shop for WIC foods.

The just-announced expansion brings WIC stores online in not just Sullivan but Dutchess, Orange, Putnam, Rockland, Ulster and Westchester counties.

Monticello, NY – The Sullivan County Department of Solid Waste & Recycling is pleased to announce that it will once again accept retired Christmas trees at no charge from Sullivan County residents, businesses and visitors at the end of this Holiday season.

For individuals with access to back yards and open spaces, strategically-placed, spent Christmas trees offer welcome cover during the winter months for birds and wildlife.
