Wanted: Volunteer Firefighters

Monticello, NY – RecruitNY, a major initiative of the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) supported by the Sullivan County Office of Emergency Management and Bureau of Fire, is rapidly approaching. This weekend, April 28-29, firehouses across the State will open their doors to the public in an effort to increase membership in the volunteer fire service. This will be the eighth straight year of this recruitment initiative, a cornerstone of FASNY’s ongoing recruitment campaign.
 

Safely Shred Your Documents for Free This Saturday

Monticello, NY – Sullivan County’s Department of Solid Waste & Recycling is pleased to announce a NO CHARGE public paper shredding opportunity for Sullivan County residents at the Monticello Transfer Station on Saturday, May 5, 2018 from 9 a.m-noon.  

County residents may bring up to 3 legal-size paper file boxes for shredding. The Paper Shred Event is first-come, first-serve, so make arrangements to arrive early. Once the Shred Truck is full (approximately 150 participants), it will depart. The shredded paper will be recycled.

Town of Mamakating: May 24-26 Shawanga Mountain VFW Post 4947 will place cemetery flags at the following cemeteries:  New Vernon, Burlingham Rural Free, Poplar Grove at Phillipsport, and the Monument at the Phillipsport Community Center.  May 27 - 10:00 a.m. Cemetery services at Burlingham Rural Free.

Sunday, May 27
Woodridge: 4:00 p.m. - Memorial Service at Veterans Park on Roosevelt Avenue in Woodridge. In the event of rain, the service will be held in the Village Hall.

County's WIC Program Ranked First in the Entire State

Liberty, NY – Sullivan County’s WIC (Women, Infants and Children) Program has been ranked #1 in New York State for providing nutrition services 100% of the time by qualified nutritionists. The ranking was determined by the NYS Department of Health’s Division of Nutrition Services, WIC Program.

The program was also recently ranked sixth in the State for the percentage of infants exclusively breastfed at six months, at 21.3%.

First Round of Plans & Progress Grants Spans Sullivan County

Monticello, NY – Eleven projects across Sullivan County will receive funding through the County’s Plans & Progress Small Grant Program. A record number of applications were received for Round 1 of the 2018 program, representing participation from all nine legislative districts.

“More than $61,000 will be distributed, leveraging over half a million dollars in total project costs,” said District 9 Legislator Alan Sorensen, chair of the Planning Committee. “This will positively impact many worthy initiatives in every part of the County.”
