Monticello, NY – Sullivan County will be collecting Christmas trees free of charge from December 26-January 31. Residents, businesses, and visitors can drop off their trees at one of six County transfer stations. For locations and hours, visit www.sullivanny.gov/Departments/SolidWasteRecycling/CountyLandfill.
“Residents, businesses, and visitors with limited access to open space are encouraged to take their trees to any Sullivan County Transfer Station for FREE disposal,” said Recycling Coordinator Kassie Thelman.
Sullivan County employees will chip the trees to incorporate them for use as mulch in County parks, landscaping and beautification projects. Repurposing wood chips helps to conserve natural resources and enhance the appearance of the County.
Or Do It Yourself!
“For individuals with access to backyards and open spaces, strategically-placed, spent Christmas trees offer welcome cover during the winter months for birds and wildlife,” Thelman explained. “However you choose to dispose of your Christmas tree, remember, they DO NOT belong in your home recycling bin. It is best to choose an option that will keep your tree out of the landfill.”
