D&H Canal Interpretive Center Opens for the Season

D&H Canal Interpretive Center

Summitville, NY – The Delaware & Hudson Canal Interpretive Center (16 Bova Road, Summitville) will be open to the public this Saturday and Sunday (May 23 & 24) from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Join them on Sunday, May 24 at 1 p.m. for a history walk along the D&H Canal and adjacent O&W Rail Trail, led by Kerron Barnes. This walk will meet at the Interpretive Center and will be approximately 2 miles long.

Join them for a second walk, learning about the birds and wildlife that live along the canal, on Sunday, June 14 from 8-9 a.m., led by Dr. Walter Jahn. This walk will also meet at the Interpretive Center.

The Center will be open every weekend starting June 13 through Labor Day from 10 a.m.–5 p.m. Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays.

The D&H Canal Interpretive Center displays the historic remains of the former Delaware & Hudson Canal, including a lock and waste weir. The Center takes visitors on a journey to explore life on the canal and through each phase of the canal’s construction and its 70 years of operation.

Learn about the lock system and enjoy the historic features of the site. Hike along the canal towpath from Summitville to Wurtsboro. Occasional special events are held.

“Whether you are a fanatic canal enthusiast or simply wonder why there are remnants of fancy stone walls in strange places along Route 209, the D&H Canal Interpretive Center will either solve some mysteries or fill in a few gaps about what people were up to in this area starting in the 1820s,” explained Sullivan County Parks Director Brian Scardefield. “The Interpretive Center also offers free group tours on select days. These are great for school groups, history clubs, and community groups! Our maximum group size is 40 people.”

The Center also houses a few original artifacts from the canal, photographs, paintings, documents, postcards, numerous maps, and other canal-related materials. A bookstore and restrooms are available. Admission is free!
