DA Conaty Urges Safe and Responsible Driving on New Year’s Eve

New Year's Message

Monticello, NY - As Sullivan County prepares to ring in the New Year, District Attorney Brian Conaty is urging residents and visitors to celebrate responsibly and make smart choices behind the wheel. New Year’s Eve remains one of the most dangerous nights of the year for impaired and reckless driving, and law enforcement agencies across the county will be increasing patrols to keep roadways safe.

“New Year’s Eve should be a night of celebration, not tragedy,” said District Attorney Conaty. “Too many lives are lost each year because someone chose to drive under the influence. If you plan to drink, plan ahead. Arrange a ride, designate a sober driver, or use a ride‑share service. There is absolutely no excuse for putting others at risk.”

DA Conaty emphasized that his office will continue to aggressively prosecute cases involving impaired driving, including alcohol, drugs, and combined influence. He noted that the consequences of a DWI arrest extend far beyond the holiday weekend, impacting employment, finances, and personal safety.

In addition to impaired driving, Conaty cautioned motorists to be mindful of winter road conditions, increased pedestrian activity, and the likelihood of heavier traffic throughout the evening.

“Your decisions on New Year’s Eve can save a life, maybe even your own,” Conaty added. “We want everyone in Sullivan County to start 2026 safely. Please celebrate responsibly, look out for one another, and make choices that ensure everyone gets home.”

Residents are encouraged to report suspected impaired drivers by contacting local law enforcement or dialing 911.
