DA Conaty Announces Life Sentence for Persistent Violent Felony Offender

Bryan Robinson

Monticello, NY - On August 7, 2025, Sullivan County District Attorney Brian P. Conaty announced that Bryan Robinson, 38, of Monticello, was sentenced to 22 years’ to life in state prison as a Persistent Violent Felony Offender by Sullivan County Court Judge James R. Farrell upon Robinson’s convictions for Robbery in the First Degree, a class B violent felony, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, a class D felony, and Grand Larceny in the Fourth Degree, a class E felony, following a three-day jury trial. In addition to the prison sentence, the court awarded restitution to the Monticello Quick Mart in the amount of $1,566.

The jury found that on September 17, 2023, Robinson walked into the Citgo Gas Station on State Route 42 in Monticello with a face covering and a knife. After entering the store, he went behind the counter and threatened to kill the store clerk if he did not open the cash register. The clerk acquiesced, permitting the defendant to forcibly steal approximately $1,566 in U.S. currency and cigarettes from the Citgo Gas Station in an effort to protect his life.

Robinson’s arrest followed a four-month investigation by Sergeant Mendez of the Monticello Police Department into the masked robbery. This case was prosecuted at trial by Chief Assistant District Attorney Michael J. Puma with the assistance of Senior Assistant District Attorney Danielle K. Blackaby. Robinson was represented by attorneys Joel Proyect and Glenn Kroll.

Robinson was eligible for Persistent Violent Felony Offender treatment based upon his prior violent felony convictions, including convictions for one count of Robbery in the First Degree, a class B violent felony, two counts of Robbery in the Second Degree, class C violent felonies, before the Kings County Supreme Court in 2004 for which he was sentenced to a five-year state prison sentence; and a conviction for Robbery in the First Degree, a Class B violent felony, before the Orange County Court in 2010 for which he was sentenced to a 14-year prison sentence.

This was the defendant’s fifth Robbery conviction, including his third conviction for armed Robbery in the First Degree, for possessing a dangerous instrument and or a firearm during the course of a robbery. The defendant’s last Robbery conviction in 2009 stemmed from the robbery of a hotel clerk at Howard Johnson’s in Middletown, New York. During the offense, the motel clerk was struck multiple times in the head with a baseball bat, causing serious physical injury to the clerk.

Sullivan County District Attorney Brian P. Conaty said: “This lengthy prison sentence ensures that Robinson will no longer pose a threat to the Sullivan County community and the greater State of New York for the remainder of his natural life. Those who carry dangerous weapons and commit violent acts for their own personal self-interest will be held to account. I sympathize with the victim in this case who woke up that morning with the expectation to arrive home safely without threats against his life. I hope that this verdict will provide some solace to the victim, and send a message to violent offenders that as District Attorney I will continue to seek sentences commensurate with the risk of violence posed to the community by these individuals. I remain dedicated to serving the People and businesses of this County each and every day so they may go about their lives without fear of violence or theft. I applaud the hard work and dedication of all the law enforcement officers involved in Robinson’s identification, apprehension, and prosecution as this sentence truly makes Sullivan County a safer place.”
