Monticello, NY - On January 12, 2026, Sullivan County District Attorney Brian P. Conaty announced that Robert Dunn, 27, of Liberty, was sentenced to sixteen years incarceration in state prison to be followed by five years of post-release supervision upon his convictions for Kidnapping in the Second Degree, a class B violent felony and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Third Degree, a class D felony. Dunn previously pled guilty to those charges thereby admitting that on November 29, 2024, he unlawfully abducted another individual and further threatened the use of deadly physical force to prevent the victim’s liberation. Dunn, who had one prior violent felony conviction, was sentenced by Sullivan County Court Judge James R. Farrell.
Dunn was arrested on December 11, 2024, by members of the Village of Liberty Police Department following an investigation into a past assault on a female victim. After receiving the initial complaint, the Village of Liberty Police Department learned that Dunn abducted the female victim against her will for several hours at 5 West Liberty Street, in the Village of Liberty, while physically assaulting her and threatening the use of deadly physical force should the victim attempt to escape. Upon escaping, the victim was able to obtain assistance in contacting the Village of Liberty Police Department who immediately responded and secured EMS transport to Garnet Medical Center Catskills to treat the victim’s serious injuries. After ensuring the victim’s safety and medical treatment, members of the Village of Liberty Police Department went to work to immediately identify suspects, including the defendant, Robert Dunn. Robert Dunn fled the area in an attempt to escape, which led the Village of Liberty Police Department on a relentless search, whereby they tracked, located, and apprehended the defendant in the New York City metropolitan area. This case was prosecuted by ADA Danielle Blackaby.
Conaty said: “I want to thank the Village of Liberty Police Department for their swift action ensuring the victim received proper medical treatment following this gruesome kidnapping and assault. Their diligent investigation led to the quick apprehension of Dunn who had fled Sullivan County following this violent crime. This lengthy prison sentence is a direct response to the heinous and violent nature of Dunn’s actions.”
