Watkins Glen, NY – The Sullivan County Bureau of Fire recently participated in the New York State Fire Coordinators Conference in Watkins Glen, joining fire service leaders from across the State to discuss public safety, training, and the future of emergency response.

Representing Sullivan County were Fire Coordinator John Hauschild, Chief Deputy Fire Coordinator Jack Halchak, Deputy Fire Coordinator Bill Lothrop, Special Operations Deputy Fire Coordinator Brian Soller, and Training Coordinator Joe Mall.

Conference sessions addressed a range of critical topics, including grant opportunities, the State’s new fire reporting system, disaster safety assessments, solar energy emergency response, and lessons learned from a major fire in Ontario County. A strong emphasis was also placed on the growing role of artificial intelligence in emergency services.

Sullivan County Health and Wellness Coordinator Jill Holland delivered a presentation highlighting the importance of supporting firefighter mental health an increasingly recognized priority within the fire service.

Additional discussions focused on firefighter training programs, fire prevention initiatives, and the future of New York’s volunteer fire service. With approximately 93 percent of departments staffed by volunteers, recruitment and retention remain key challenges Statewide.

“Attending this conference allows us to bring back valuable ideas and resources to better support our firefighters and protect our communities,” said Fire Coordinator John Hauschild.

He added that the conference reinforced how Sullivan County’s efforts align with Statewide priorities and best practices.
